This past Friday, Hamas declared that it had endorsed certain aspects of Donald Trump's demand to conclude the war in Gaza, consenting to a hostage exchange and to surrender administrative power in the coastal enclave, but stated that it wished additional negotiations on remaining parts of the plan.

The group did not specify whether it would comply to lay down its arms – a critical element of Trump's proposal – and remained vague its response to other sections of the 20-part strategy initially suggested by Trump last Monday.

The response remained uncertain how Trump would react to a conditional reply to his proposal, which came just hours after he set a weekend deadline for the group to answer. He stated that if an agreement was not achieved "chaos" would ensue against Hamas, whose militants he portrayed as encircled and trapped.

In a statement, the group expressed that it was giving its "approval of freeing all Israeli prisoners – both living and deceased – according to the exchange formula included in Donald Trump's plan, with the necessary field conditions for executing the swap."

The statement continued to state that the organization was ready to hand over "the administration of the Gaza Strip to a local entity of independent experts founded on local agreement and backed by regional support."

Areas Requiring Additional Discussion

However, the group said that "other issues" in Trump's strategy would need to be negotiated further "through a consolidated local process." The unspecified issues that the group will request negotiations on are expected to involve the issue of its weapons, the withdrawal of Jewish state troops from the region, and international guarantees for the implementation of a lasting ceasefire.

Trump's plan demanded an swift end to fighting in the area, an swap of hostages and local detainees within 72 hours of the agreement's signing, a phased withdrawal of state forces from the strip, as well as the disarmament of the group and a post-conflict interim authority headed by Trump.
